How to Verify if a Chinese Supplier Is Reliable: 5 Must-Check Items

Not all Chinese suppliers are created equal. Some are legitimate factories with 20 years of experience. Others are trading companies pretending to be factories. And some are outright scams. Here are 5 things you must check before placing any order.

1. Business License Verification

Every legitimate Chinese company has a business license (营业执照) issued by the government. Ask for it and verify:

• Company name — does it match what they told you?
• Registration date — newer companies (less than 2 years) carry higher risk
• Registered capital — higher capital generally means more established
• Business scope — does it include manufacturing or just trading?

You can verify on China's National Enterprise Credit Information System (国家企业信用信息公示系统).

2. Factory Audit (In-Person Visit)

This is the single most important verification step. Photos and videos can be faked. A factory visit cannot. During an audit, check:

• Production lines — are they actually manufacturing, or just assembling?
• Equipment — modern, well-maintained machines vs. old, broken equipment
• Workers — how many? Are they skilled? Do they have proper safety equipment?
• Warehouse — organized and clean, or chaotic and dirty?
• Quality control area — do they have a dedicated QC station?

3. Sample Order

Never skip samples. Order 3-5 samples before committing to bulk. Evaluate:

• Quality matches what was promised
• Materials feel right (not cheaper substitutes)

4. Reference Check

Ask the supplier for:

• Existing client list — who have they worked with?
• Order records — can they show real production records?
• Export records — do they actually export to your market?

Then verify independently. Contact their claimed clients. Check if they have Alibaba trade assurance history. Look for reviews on sourcing forums.

5. Certification Verification

If your product requires certifications (CE, FDA, SASO, etc.):

• Ask for copies of all relevant certificates
• Verify authenticity — contact the certification body directly
• Check validity dates — expired certificates are worthless
• Match the factory — certificate should name the same company

Fake certificates are common in China. Always verify directly with the issuing body.
